SWEDISH

Swedish massage (or classical massage), is the style of massage we are most accustomed to in North America.  It was pioneered by a Swedish physiologist, Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839) at the University of Stockholm, though Dutch practitioner Johann Georg Mezger applied the French terms to name the basic strokes. The five basic strokes are effleurage (sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic tapping), friction (cross fiber or with the fibers) and vibration/shaking. It is relaxing and invigorating.  In addition to improving circulation, reducing pain and stiffness, it has been shown to lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) in the body. Swedish massage is at the base of therapeutic and sport massage.

THERAPEUTIC

In a therapeutic massage we move beyond simple relaxation. We treat specific problems and find solutions to treat muscle tension and chronic pain, and to promote recovery. I use various tools are such as passive mobilizations, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, and other specialized Swedish techniques.

SPORTS

Sports massage is a similar therapeutic practice but is directed towards active individuals and athletes.  The approach aids in the rehabilitation, preparation to and recuperation from physical activity.  It is deep work and will often employ passive/active stretches, and counter tension.

THAI

Traditional Thai massage has its roots in Ayurveda - an ancient Hindu system still practiced in India, and in the west as alternative medicine. Central to Thai massage is "metta". Metta is an ancient Pali word dating back more than 2,500 years ago to the time of the Buddha. It means unconditional love, and is often translated as “loving-kindness”. Traditional Thai massage is recognized as a medical and therapeutic discipline in Thailand. In it, yoga style stretches and acupressure are applied along energy lines called sen lines. This releases stagnant energy and brings the body into balance. It is traditionally performed fully clothed on a floor mat without oil; but I have adapted certain techniques and principles to table massage.

TUI NA

Tui Na is a branch of traditional Chinese medicine that has been in use for more than 2,000 years. It is a companion to acupuncture and has its roots in treating martial artists. Today it is still used as a therapeutic practice to treat various conditions and promote general good health. The depth and strength of some maneuvers are not for anybody, but I very helpful. In many was it is similar to thai and sports massage and in its pressures and manipulations.

LOMILOMI

Lomilomi is a sacred Hawaiian massage. It is traditionally used as a healing practice by trained healers, and used in the common household a restorative treatment. It is mostly performed with the palms and the forearms and its movements are reminiscent of that of the ocean and waves. Not only is it enveloping but it is powerful body work that brings about balance and harmony.

FOOT MASSAGE

Foot massage, also referred to as reflexology, relaxes and improves general health. Its use of “reflex points” under and around the foot triggers internal mechanisms of self-healing and it is believed to prevent health problems. Each point corresponds to a part of the body or an organ. Acupressure on these points relieves tension, improves circulation and helps restore balance and vital energy.

Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are.
